catalpa tree

15 May

I’ve been out of town for a few days and came back to find the catalpa tree in the front yard covered with blooms. Each cluster is 6″-8″ and looks like a bunch of miniature orchids. We had one of these on the property when I was a kid–it’s a great climbing tree because as it ages the limbs develop an interesting, gnarled pattern. This one is only about six years old so it’s still pretty small. As kids we called it a “lady cigar” tree (it’s also nicknamed the Indian cigar tree) because of the long seed pods that develop each fall. I feared that would result in lots of seedlings sprouting up everywhere, but so far that hasn’t been an issue. With its 6″ leaves, it’s a great shade tree.
