white lily

Lilies are great plants for beginning gardeners–put the bulb in the ground and wait for results. As long as you can figure out what side of the bulb is ‘up’ the flowers will grow. They’re also great as cut flowers for arrangements because the stems are pretty sturdy and buds will keep opening after the flower is cut as long as they have plenty of water. Beware of the stamens, though. Stamens are the little stem-like projections in the center of the flower. The dust on the stamens leaves a yellow stain that’s hard to get off your skin and very hard to get out of clothing. That’s why most floral designers cut off the stamens before using the flowers in an arrangement.
