christmas cactus – schlumbergera

25 Nov

Conventional wisdom says that to get a Christmas cactus to bloom at Christmastime, you need to put it outside for a few days when night temps are around 50 degrees and days are around 70. Alternatively, you can put it in a dark closet for a couple of days, then bring it out and water and feed it. This one always starts blooming around the first week of December regardless of what I do. It’s had buds on it for about a week. I often think it should be displayed as a hanging plant. The flowers point down, and you can miss the detail in the petals if it just sits on a shelf.

Yours is a lovely color! I have a red one that is blooming right now. Once I have written a poem to go with it – I’ll be posting the pictures I took of it this week. I don’t do anything with mine either: It sits in a planter in an east facing window.
