itea13itea13 001Several itea bushes grow in a bed surrounding the patio.  (On the left is spirea just coming into bloom; on the right the purple leaf loosestrife already is nearly 3′ tall; to the rear is a trellis of red honeysuckle.)    If you click on the close-up to the left, you can see that the flower buds open from the base near the stem out to the end.  Although itea is very pretty, it’s grown as much for its red fall foliage as for its flowers.
