spiderwort – tradescantia

spiderwort13 003Spiderwort is a weed-like flower in that it casually inserts itself throughout the garden at will; even the leaves look like a weedy grass before the flowers open.  Flower colors range from almost white to deep purple, depending, I think, on the amount of sun. spiderwort13 007Though each stem bears only a few flowers, opening only as long as it’s sunny and only for a day or two, you can see in the detail below that each stem also produces numerous buds to replace spent blooms.  Buds will continue forming, allowing the plant to continue producing flowers until the weather becomes very warm.  At that time, the flowering season will end and the leaves and stems will turn yellow and fade.spiderwort13 004
